Pressure, force and area
Pressure = force ÷ area. Choose what to solve for and enter the other two.
Formulas
P = F / A · F = P × A · A = F / P
Use consistent units. The calculator converts everything to pascals, newtons and square metres first.
Worked example
A hydraulic cylinder with a 2 in² piston at 1,000 psi produces F = 1,000 × 2 = 2,000 lbf (8.9 kN). A 1,000 lbf load on 2 in² is 500 psi.
For a round piston, A = π d² / 4. Rod-side force subtracts the rod area.
