The units
- W (watts): The SI unit of power: one joule per second.
- kW (kilowatts): Motors, generators and building loads.
- MW (megawatts): Power plants and large industrial loads.
- hp (mechanical horsepower): US engine and motor rating: 550 ft·lbf per second.
- PS (metric horsepower): European engine rating (also CV, cv or PS): 75 kgf·m per second.
- BTU/h (BTU per hour): Heating and cooling capacity in US HVAC.
- kcal/h (kilocalories per hour): Older metric heating and cooling capacity.
- TR (tons of refrigeration): Cooling capacity: the heat to melt a ton of ice in 24 h, 12,000 BTU/h.
- ft·lbf/s (foot-pounds-force per second): The mechanical definition behind horsepower.
Horsepower comes in several kinds: mechanical (550 ft·lbf/s, 745.7 W, used here as 'hp'), metric (PS, 735.5 W) and electrical (746 W). Cooling loads use BTU/h and the refrigeration ton (12,000 BTU/h).
